AI Design Explorations

AI Based Design Explorations

What if… is a great question to ask while trying to bring in creativity (which we also utilize in ideation). I’ve been exploring VR glass designs via some ‘what if’ questions. The work was generated by Midjourney’s AI based design tool. Coming up with creative ideas may sometimes mean stretching to extremes or looking at other fields to get inspired. In a time where all VR glasses are becoming more uniform, I wanted to explore different possibilities. Hope you enjoy them, feel free to drop a message to me with your feedback. You can request a beta access to Midjourney and start exploring your art & design projects.

Some of these explorations were of course for pleasure. As in the ‘what if Wes Anderson and Apple designed VR glasses together’ example. I love the outcomes from an artistic perspective though.

FUTURISTIC GLASSES INSPIRED BY DALI

Liked the colorful glasses, functional nose pads and the aesthetic placement of the embedded cameras for inside-out tracking.

A ROCK BAND TAKE ON GLASSES

Sharing the Stanley Kubrick - 2001: A Space Odyssey as a moodboard, however I was really excited about the AD/DC inspired outcome here. I would definitely buy those and start smashing some cubes in Beat Saber. Maybe Highway to Hell?

INSPIRED FOR KIDS

Nowadays kids like their presents most when they come in VR boxes. So why not get inspired by them and tailor for them? I love the playful color drops on the second version, the smaller and colorful components with kids in mind. Comfortable straps and kids ergonomics in focus, carefully tailored content to foster creativity and help wiith education could help VR be more concern-free in the future.

INSPIRED BY NIKE

I felt refreshed by the outcome of these series, so I’ll share a large variety of iterations. It kind of brings the ‘Apple Watch wristband mood into VR glasses. Maybe Nike should design VR glasses. :)

A CYBERPUNK TAKE

These are among my favorites with their aesthetic lining surrounding the cameras, colorful controls and fitting form.

JOHN LENNON’S TIMELESS STYLE

The iteration shows how the AI model landed on the versions shown later. I think the best aspect of these glasses would be the rich field of view and its colors.

COULD YOU SKETCH FOR ME, BITTE?

Not only realistic designs, but Midjourney was also able to assist me with sketching some futuristic VR glass ideas.

CAN’T-WON’T DO WITHOUT ALUMINIUM

BRINGING SOME DIETER RAMS SPIRIT INTO GLASSES

Functionalist designs of Rams for Braun, next to Dyson’s form+function approach was a fun iteration.

WRAPPING UP

(with some iterations for fun) Iterations on the right are inspired by da Vinci himself, and left iteration fitting more into brutalist art.

a stark style of functionalist architecture, especially of the 1950s and 1960s, characterized by the use of steel and concrete in massive blocks.

Within VR context, and the current immaturity in the state of design, the art generated by the AI prompt on left makes me drift into thoughts. Hope you enjoyed the iterations.
