Virtual Fashion Design

Virtual Fashion Design

Designing digital garments (Clo3D) and creative explorations via AI

I have been undertaking a professional study programme in Parsons on virtual fashion design (utilizing Clo3D), which spans around 4 courses (apprx. 500hrs in total including projects and learning hours). I’m looking forward to completing the program in ‘24.

My goal for undertaking this program is to bring depth to immersive experience design in fashion projects. I’m looking forward to exploring the interactive possibilities of combining Unity + XR + Fashion Design in the upcoming year and also:

  • Construct a virtual fashion photo/video shoot with animated avatars and garments

  • Implement a virtual fashion show for a capsule collection

  • Customize clothes for custom avatars

  • Create an immersive style advice usecase bringing brands - experts and customers together

  • Experiment with selling virtual designs online in various platforms

  • Create an on-chain linked digital + physical garment construction

2D and 3D GARMENT CONSTRUCTION

Creating + adapting patterns in 2D, then further constructing these patterns in 3D to reach a final state of virtual garment.

SEWING & SIMULATING CONSTRUCTIONS

Learning about different virtual sewing techniques to construct patterns correctly.

GETTING PRINT-READY

Preparing garments in conventions to fulfill physical printing, such as adding Annotations, notches, seam allowance, manual dart intakes and pattern symbols.

ZIPPERS, POCKETS, BUTTONS

Enhancing garments achieve desired realistic outcomes.

EXPERIMENTING WITH FULLNESS & DARTS TO CREATE COMPLEX STRUCTURES

Learning and practising possible combinations of darts and fullness. Following pattern explanations to achieve this.

EXPERIMENTING WITH AVATAR POSES AND STRUCTURE

Just some experiments below exploring different physique materials and poses for avatars to display garments on in a creative manner.

CREATING CUSTOM STRUCTURES & FIT

Where necessary, using 3D tools to draw and enhance 2D patterns to a particular style.

Adapting the garment to the avatar’s size and highlighting their features with further fitting.

SURFACE DESIGN, TRIMS AND HARDWARE

To enhance the depth of the garment style, edit textures, introduce displacement/normal/metallic maps, prints and embroidery. Depending on the desired style, using customized 3D objects and embedding them as hardware pieces.

EXPERIMENTING WITH ELASTICITY

Using tools like elasticity to bring further fit, movement and realism to the garment.

STYLING AND ANIMATION

Further adapting fashion avatars to create matching styles into created collections. Creating-adapting-registering accessories, animating a fashion show sequence to bring collections to life.

CREATIVE EXPLORATIONS USING AI

I also enjoy exploring different styles and creative directions by following up with the most recent updates in AI, using tools such as Midjourney & Runway
